From The Principal
Dear Families
Welcome to the ‘Learning Pit’ - James Nottingham is an educator and the brains behind the creation of the ‘Learning Pit’. The ‘Learning Pit’ supports a culture of challenge, curiosity, reflection, and resilience in our children. The ‘Learning Pit’ is often referred to in our classrooms. It is a place that teachers and parents intentionally place children so that they can learn. We have all been in ‘the pit’.
Think of the strategies you have used to solve a problem, like purchasing a new car. Your mechanic tells you that your car is past repairing, and you need a new one. As an adult, we can safely assume that your first strategy was not to call your mother for help or to sit down in the service station and cry uncontrollably. The steps probably included:
- Selling your car to the local wrecking yard.
- Asking a friend what they drive and if they like it.
- Researching cars in the local area that are for sale.
- Researching available models for fuel efficiency.
- And so on…………
How do you feel when you’ve persevered and managed to solve the problem? Relieved? Triumphant? Do you think you could solve this problem on your own next time? If the only strategy we had was ‘get someone else to do it’, we wouldn’t be challenged and wouldn’t learn anything.
The bottom line is that challenge is good for learning and good for our wellbeing. When children have the strategies to succeed, they feel good and are more willing to invest in new learning next time. They also learn that being ‘in the pit’ is not so bad and that with perseverance and confidence, they can ‘get out’ and feel successful.
NAPLAN Online – In weeks four and five, our Year 3 and 5 students will be taking part in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy: otherwise known as ‘NAPLAN’. What was once a paper assessment is now an online assessment. In addition to the preparation that children are doing in their classrooms, the Year 3 and 5 students participated in a practice test last week. During this practice, the children asked some great questions and they all seemed very comfortable with the format of the assessment. During the assessment window, students will participate in writing, reading, numeracy and language conventions assessments. These assessments are a snapshot of how a child is going on a particular day. The information that these tests provide compliments a large collection of evidence that teachers use to identify student needs. Teachers then use this data to design learning that caters for these needs. An email will be sent soon to our Year 3 and 5 families providing more information about these assessments. If you have any questions or concerns, please see your child’s teacher.
Winter Uniform – Our school’s winter uniform comes into effect next Tuesday the 3rd of May. At Sacred Heart, we talk about aspiring to excellence. Being dressed in our uniform and wearing this with pride shows that students are ready for learning and part of our ‘team’. Our uniform shop is open each Monday and Thursday morning from 8.00am to 10.30am (Tuesdays with Monday public holidays). A copy of our uniform guidelines is on our ‘Parent Portal’. A copy has also been attached to this newsletter.
Early Years (Under 8’s) Morning – save the date! We are looking forward to holding our ‘Early Years Morning’ on the 20th of May. We have already locked in a number of stall holders and our teachers are organising some fun activities for the children to enjoy. All families in our local area with children under the age of 8 are very welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you here.
Take care and God bless,
Mr Tyronne Maher
From The APRE
Welcome back to another term at Sacred Heart! It has been so nice to walk around the school and see so many happy and welcoming children and parents, many going out of their way to say, “Good Morning Mrs Lucas!” It’s this sense of hospitality that makes walking around our school such a pleasure.
ANZAC Day at Sacred Heart
A special thank you to Mrs Barrett, Mrs Anderson and our Year 6 students for so reverently and respectfully leading us in our ANZAC Day Liturgy last Friday. We prayed that we may spread the light of hope throughout our world so that we commit to living in peace and harmony. Each class laid a wreath in our sacred space in memory of who all died in war and conflict.

Prayer of the Week
From Prep
We invite parents to attend our latest information session on the afternoon of Tuesday, 10th May in the Prep J classroom. This very important information session will help parents become familiar with the next steps in the learning journey of their children. We recommend all families come along — even those who have younger children in prep this year (ie. not their eldest) as education changes so very quickly, it is important to stay up to date.
This term Prep students continue to work through the topics below that form part of our Semester One Units.
Integrated Unit – Science, HaSS, Religion, Design Technologies, Digital Technologies, Visual Art
Throughout Semester One, Prep students will explore stories of their past, discuss how they know about the past and identify significant events in their own life. They will identify how they commemorate special events and explore various church celebrations. Students will explore the ways we celebrate, including prayer celebrations. As part of this component of the unit, children will explore the story of Jesus’ life and how these stories are recorded in the Bible. Students will then begin to plan their own class celebrations, designing and creating a special celebration hat for the celebration. They will explore the features of various materials to meet their design needs. By incorporating various artistic, design and digital mediums, children will create their hat and reflect on their creations.
Maths
This Semester, the Prep children will practice counting as well as reading and writing numbers to 10 and beyond. With concrete materials, they will explore concepts such as numbers before and after, as well as part-part-whole relationships. The children have started to count the number of days they have been at Prep, with a focus on numbers that end in a zero. They will apply these skills in concrete, verbal and written ways.
English
This semester, the Prep children will explore the differences between home and school, and the informal and structured situations in which we learn. They will develop their skills with rhyme and syllables as well as blending and segmenting sounds in words in readiness for reading and learn letter names and sounds. They will participate in modelled, shared, and guided reading, viewing and storytelling using a range of texts for enjoyment. They will regularly respond orally and pictorially to these texts and to each other. The children will begin learning high-frequency words as part of our weekly Prep routine. The children will begin to apply these skills to familiar reading and writing tasks.

From Year 1J
Welcome back to Term 2 Sacred Heart family!
It was nice to see so many smiling faces back at school after the Easter break and ready for an exciting and busy term ahead.
In Week 1 of Term 2, 1J participated in an Easter Liturgy to reflect on the Easter story and to discuss ways we can walk with Jesus every day.
Over the last week, we also read stories and completed different activities to learn more about the ANZACs. We spoke about how brave the men and women were and still are, to go off to war and made mention to how Australians show their respect by going to commemorative ceremonies on ANZAC Day.
This term, 1J is covering the following:
English: Students will revisit writing a recount specifically to allow the opportunity to improve their use of descriptive language, build on their ability to use compound sentences and correct punctuation.
Maths: Continue to focus on numbers to 100 (place value, skip counting, odd and even numbers etc.), addition and subtraction sums, 2D shapes and 3D objects and recognising and describing one-half as one of two equal parts.
Religion: Students will explore the sacraments of Eucharist and Baptism and the symbols, actions and words associated with these sacraments.
HaSS: Students will participate in an historical inquiry into the similarities and differences between their daily life and that of their parents and grandparents.
Show and Share: A grandparent interview sheet was sent home last week and emailed out with the Weekly Words. This interview will be used as Show and Share once the interviews have been returned. I look forward to hearing about their favourite toys, what chores they had as children and if they could have something from the present in the past, what would it be and why.
Science – Look! Listen: The students' understanding of the role of light and sound in our lives and our community will be developed through hands-on activities.
Health: Students will explore the concept of the Learning Pit linking in with the Zones of Regulation (Term 1 focus). They will also come up with strategies to improve their growth mindset.
That’s all for now. Enjoy your long weekend!
Mrs Hannah Jesshope
