Sacred Heart Parish
From The Principal
Dear Families,
Supporting our children - Importance in creating an optimal learning environment, is the need for children to feel safe and included. During our assembly on Monday, I spoke to the students about the need to be responsible members of our community. We spoke briefly about how here at Sacred Heart we aim to ‘walk with Jesus every day’. We connected this idea of walking with Jesus, to being the best that we can be for one another.
It is important when things are challenging for our students that they seek the assistance of their teachers to support them in the challenges they experience when interacting with their peers. This support is most powerful and useful when it is provided immediately. Unfortunately, both parents and teachers hear of things happening well after they have occurred, making it very difficult to support the child. In a letter to some families recently, I included the following advice:
If the problem continues, don’t ignore your child’s report or tell them to ‘stay away’ from the other child/children. In doing so, we are actually telling our children to ignore bad behaviour or to exclude other people; both of which could get them into trouble. Instead, make time to speak with your child’s teacher. Of course, if you feel like you have exhausted all methods, make a time to come and have a chat with a member of our leadership team. While these times can be difficult, we must remind ourselves and our children, that we learn new strategies when we overcome challenges.
Class in Focus 3/4G – Last week I had the great privilege of discussing with the learners of 3/4G what they were learning. I noticed that they were drawing floor plans of their own homes. The children very confidently told me that ‘We are learning to identify the information communication technologies in our homes’. We call this the ‘learning intention’ and this can span over a lesson or over a series of lessons. They were very clear on this as they did not confuse the ‘criteria’ of drawing their house plan, with what they were ultimately trying to learn or achieve. The criteria are the steps towards achieving the overall intention. We call these ‘success criteria’ and teachers use these to step children through the learning by providing them with feedback; making them feel successful. Well done 3/4G!
Parent/Teacher Meetings Reminder - these will be held this Monday the 21st March from 12pm. Your children will be supervised while these meetings occur. This meeting with your child’s teacher is the only one that we expect all parents to attend. Later in the year we offer another formal opportunity however, unlike these meetings on the 21st March, are optional to attend. Of course, we are always open to other meetings that may need to happen in between – both formal and informal. Registration for these meetings will be through the Sentral Parent App. If you have not registered your family key to access the portal, it would be best to do this as soon as possible. Please contact the office should you require assistance with registering your key. We look forward to meeting with you to celebrate your child’s successes while sharing their challenges and next steps in their learning.
God Bless,
Mr Tyronne Maher

Whole School Assemblies start back!
It was wonderful to gather as a school community for our first two In Real Life (IRL) assemblies! A special thank you to our Year 6 leaders who have lead the last two assemblies and also to the students who have shown great listening skills! 6B lead the school in prayer and also a chance for our Student Elected Leaders to formally introduce themselves to the school community. Students who are being presented with awards will be notified via text message on the Friday before the Assembly. It has been wonderful to see the students showing so much pride in themselves when they are going up to accept their certificate! Birthday certificates will be presented to students in class rather than at Assembly to ensure birthdays are celebrated in class nice and close to a student’s birthday.
PB4L
Congratulations to Amaru Washington-Duncan, Hayley Webb, Archie Grandison, Maxton French, William Bourke and Amber De Chastel who have all won a golden ticket to the Gotcha Pizza Party with Mr Maher after being having their Gotcha drawn out during our weekly Assemblies!
This year we have also re-introduced a Student Choice award so that each class can vote on a classmate they think has consistently displayed the expected behaviours. The student who is voted by their peers will win a golden ticket to the Gotcha Pizza Party in Week 8!
International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is celebrated on Tuesday 8th March and is all about celebrating the many social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women throughout history. It is also a good opportunity to teach children of all ages about gender equality.
In a Catholic school, we emphasize the dignity of all human people, that we are all made in the image and likeness of God. We also emphasize that we are all different and that we look after each other.
Indiannah, Alana, Yamarley and Keeley accompanied me to the Interntational Women’s Day breakfast which was hosted by St Saviour’s College. The girls represented our school beautifully and they enjoyed the opportunity to mix with the College students and to hear the inspirational speeches. College Principal and past Sacred Heart and St Saviour’s College student, Ms Sharon Collins, spoke about the importance of being aware of our own thoughts which can hinder our ability to strive for and celebrate our attempts to strive for excellence. Some of you may have spotted Ms Sharon Collins in the Chronicle recently as she made the list of 100 inspiring women from across the Toowoomba region! What a wonderful achievement from a truly inspirational woman who lives out the Mercy values.
Events coming up
The easing of restrictions regarding social gatherings in schools allowed us to reschedule our Leadership Induction Mass and invite our Sacred Heart families who joined us to celebrate both the 2022 school year and commemorate the events leading up to Easter with the Stations of the Cross.
Thursday, 31st March at 9.00 am – Easter Pageant (Stations of the Cross)
All of our classes are preparing for the Easter Pageant in their Music classes – this really will be a collaborative project that all students can feel they have played an important part in retelling the Stations of the Cross.
God bless,
Mrs Alice Lucas

20 Days of Prep! Zero the Hero returned to our classes to bring a gift for the 20th day of school. We made beaded bracelets using 20 beads. We also talked about patterns and groups of 10. We can’t wait to see what he brings for day 30!

This term in Mathematics, Year One have counted, recognised, modeled, and ordered numbers to 100. Over the last two weeks, they also had the opportunity to partition two-digit numbers (e.g., breaking numbers up into more manageable parts). For one activity, they were asked to find the total number of paddle pop sticks in a box. It was great to see the children working together to find the total number by partitioning the paddle pop sticks into groups of tens and ones for ease of counting.

Science- Spaghetti Fun and Spaghetti Towers
The students explored and described the properties of uncooked and cooked spaghetti.
I had some wonderful discussions with the students about their explorations with spaghetti, such as:
- What are the differences between the uncooked and cooked spaghetti?
- What happened to the spaghetti for it to change from hard to soft? (It was cooked in water.)
- Why did we use the uncooked spaghetti to build the towers?
- What could you do with the cooked spaghetti that you couldn’t do with the uncooked spaghetti?
- If we ran out of uncooked spaghetti, could we change the cooked spaghetti back?
We also added some descriptive words about the uncooked/cooked spaghetti to our Science Journals.
Uncooked Spaghetti- hard, snaps, no smell, brittle, pointy
Cooked Spaghetti- sticky, bends, smells nice, stretches, rolls, soft, curls

Welcome to Week 6.
In class we have been working hard learning many different spelling rules to help us with our writing. Did you know that when a ‘c’ is followed by an ‘e’, ‘I’ or ‘y’ it says ‘s’ not ‘k’ and the same rule applies to a ‘g’ which changes it sound from ‘g’ to a ‘j’.
In Mathematics we have continued working on place value Year 2 – 1000 / Year 3 – 10 000. We have been practicing ordering numbers from smallest to largest and vice versa. We now know the difference between the greater than (>) and less than (<) signs.
In HASS we have continued our celebrations unit. This week we have learnt all about the Chinese New Year and we have compared this celebration to the New Year celebrations we experience here in Australia.
Friendly reminder:
On Monday we will begin Parent/Teacher Interviews. Don’t forget to book your compulsory appointment via the Parent Portal app.
There will be no Assembly on Monday due to Parent Teacher Interviews.
The Easter Pageant will be held on Thursday 31st March – no costumes required.
Cross Country will be held on Friday 1st April so please encourage your child to start practicing running around the back yard in preparation for their race 😊
Have a wonderful weekend. God bless you all.

The students in 3/4G are very excited about the current part of their science. They are currently charting the growth of a seed, photographing and measuring it daily and putting this information onto a power point. Some seeds are doing better than others- some may be being killed with kindness (very enthusiastic watering). Check out the photo taken in front of one of our recent works of Art.
This week we have explored the world of St Patrick and why he is celebrated in Australia. Students have created their own shamrocks to illustrate the connection between this Irish symbol and the Holy Trinity.
In the coming week we will be working on our presentation for assembly in week 8. No assembly in week 7 as I will be seeing you all for our Parent Teacher Interviews.
See you then

From 4C
4C Learnings! What do the students of 4C say?
What have we been learning in Religious Education?
Cohen said – (about Saint Patrick) ‘Patrick got taken by pirates from England to Ireland when he was 16. They sold him to the person who used them as slaves and then 6 years later God told Patrick to go 200 miles out to sea and go on a ship to ship back to England. He went home and learned about God and then went back to Ireland to teach everyone else.’
What have you been learning in English?
Orla said – “We have been identifying similes in ‘James and the Giant Peach’ (By Roald Dahl).
When asked why we use similes?
Anita said - ‘They give us more information’
Ada said – ‘Authors use them!’
Ruby said – ‘They make things more interesting!’
What are we learning in Mathematics?
Noah V said – ‘We’re learning our times 2 and times 4 tables’
Alia said – ‘We do games, we work with partners, and they test us and we have been writing out tables in our books.’
Lilah said (about the ‘double, double strategy for the 4 times table’) ‘ When we do times 2 we just add the number twice but when we do times 4 we just double it again!’

Father Roque visited 5L
Last week we welcomed Father Roque, Sacred Heart Parish Priest, into the 5L class. Father Roque answered the questions that the students had written about being a member of a faith community. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn from Father Roque and I thank him for being so generous with his time to come and visit our class.
Assembly Prayer
We then prepared a prayer for Assembly. We reflected on how as members of the Sacred Heart Catholic School we are members of a faith community. We reflected how our words and actions help us to live out the Mercy values of Excellence, Compassion, Hospitality and Integrity. Thank you to the parents who were able to attend the Assembly; I know the children loved seeing parents in the audience!
World’s Worst Children
Students finished writing and editing their short stories which were inspired by David Walliam’s ‘World’s Worst Children’ series. They used a checklist to edit and self-assess their story. Students were very proud of their stories, and I am looking forward to reading them.

We take this opportunity to thank all families who attended our Induction Mass Friday morning for our seniors. This year’s seniors are shaping up to be a very special group of young people who are committed to serving Sacred Heart with pride and humility.
On Thursday Mrs Barrett escorted Tyce and Indiannah to the Mayoral Morning Tea at the Highfields Cultural Centre where our 2 captains listened to some inspiring young presenters whose words resonated with them.
INDI’s take away: “It doesn’t take 1 person to lead – it takes a group.”
TYCE’s take away: “Leaders show people how to do things, not tell them.”
With only 2 more weeks until our Easter break, we have many things to get through. You will note that there was the call out for a photo of your senior with their mum, grandmother, aunt or significant female member of your family for our Easter Pageant. Please email to Mrs Barrett or send in on your child’s iPad for us to access.
Week 7 will see our parent teacher interviews occur on Monday. Thank you to those people who have booked their 10 minute slot through the parent portal. People will need to be puctual so that the interview flow and no one is kept waiting unnecessarily. If we need further time, we can always book another time at the end of our 10 minute time. Wednesday is World Maths Day: we will be celebrating this in our class with some mathematical fun that day. Friday next week is a public holiday – enjoy the long weekend.
Week 8 will be fast and furious with our Easter Pageant on Thursday and our Cross Country on Friday before ending for the term.
In class, all students have been working on their information reports (Science and English) and next week they will begin to present their information to the class. This researched creature will then be recreated in 3D using the medium of clay and focusing on the element of text in Visual Art. Finalising this art unit, sees the students choosing a learnt element and creating their own artwork before then critiquing it. Mathematics will continue with students focusing on solving 2 or more stepped problems, involving all four operations. Practising times tables are key for our students this year.
Enjoy the next fortnight.

From the Library
Hello to our Sacred Heart community.
As part of our commitment to the Sacred Heart iPad Program, we will now be communicating regular reminders with information for the most effective way for students to take care of their leased devices. We also encourage students with BYOD’s (bring your own device) use these guidelines to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of home purchased devices.
The following information is an excerpt from the Sacred Heart iPad Program Parent Guide 2022.
Care and maintenance
- Ensure that the iPad is kept clean, particularly the screen. Avoid having the iPad open whilst eating and drinking. Do not remove name, barcode or number labels attached to the iPad by the school.
- The iPad does not like to get wet! If the iPad gets wet, do not attempt to turn the device on; bring the device to school so that it may be assessed.
- Please remember that a parent or guardian must report any damage or technical issues to the office as soon as the problem occurs. We aim to resolve damage and/or technical issues within five school days.
- Most damage caused to iPads is caused by the device being dropped. When moving with the iPad, ensure the case is closed: don’t walk and use the iPad at the same time!
- Please be mindful of allowing other family members, relatives, or friends to use the device. Breakages caused by third parties may lead to expensive replacement bills!
We would like to thank you for the ongoing support given in the care and maintenance of your child's iPad.

Easter Pageant: Stations of the Cross
We are currently working towards the Easter Pageant: Stations of the Cross which will be performed on Thursday 31st March, 9am in the school hall. Students are preparing their class item and a whole school finale. This year we will not be using costumes, as I would like us to focus on the meaning of Easter. Students are asked to wear their full school uniform.
One of the Stations of the Cross is about the relationship Jesus had with his mother Mary. To enhance this station, I would like to put together a collage of different pictures of Sacred Heart students with their mother, grandparent or important female person.
If you would like to be involved in this project, could you please email the picture directly to myself before Friday 26th March. If you have already sent a picture, thank you.

Instrumental Lessons
We are very excited about the involvement in this program, with 27 students enrolling in individual or group lessons.
If you would like your child to be involved in this program for Term 2, please fill in the online form.
Lessons are paid directly to the tutor, and it is important that invoices are PAID ON TIME. If you are unable to pay for the term in a lump sum, please contact the tutor directly and discuss a payment option.
If lessons are not paid on time, your child’s lessons will be cancelled until paid.
Cross Country Carnival
CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL – FRIDAY APRIL 1
The Sacred Heart Cross Country will take place on Friday April 1 (The last day of Term 1).
The cross country will be conducted on the school oval. The students have had the opportunity to run the course during PE lessons. The carnival will commence at 9:00am and the anticipated finish time will be approximately 11:00am.
The P&F are taking the opportunity to run a bake stall on the day. It would be great to see as many families as possible support this initiative.
The school realises not all children enjoy long distance running and they often find cross country quite challenging. ‘Participating and trying your best’ is what the school expects.
Students 10 years and older have the choice to participate either in the competitive race (as per the distances listed below) or in a 1km Fun Run.
Any students wishing to represent the school at the West Zone Cross Country must participate in the competitive events. Age champion medallions will be awarded to students who win events in the 9,10,11 and 12 Years competitive races.
