FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Families,
Supporting our children together – At Sacred Heart, we value deeply the partnership between families and teachers in the support of our learners and their progress. We believe that when we work together, children can reach their next goals in learning and experience great feelings of success. This is a unique partnership like no other, integral to this relationship is a trust that each other is trying to do their best in their roles in this important work for your children. We are working with young people that need the relationship between home and school to be positive and heading in the same direction.
To illustrate this relationship, I offer the example of taking your car to the mechanic. We trust that the mechanic knows their trade and that they can do the job that they need to do. Some of us take our cars to the mechanic when something is wrong while there are those of us that take our cars in for a service so that we can prevent anything wrong happening to it. The mechanic checks our car over, identifies the problem and makes the necessary adjustments. A part may need to be purchased, replaced or repaired, you pay and then you are on your way again. If a problem is not fixed, you take your car back to the mechanic or you change mechanics. Either way, the car is your responsibility and it doesn’t care where you take it. If only the working relationship between home and school was as simple.
When we reach school age, our parents enrol us in school. Unlike taking your car for a service or repair, we cannot drop our children at school and hope that they will be ‘fixed’ by those that are trained to do the ‘fixing’. This is why we often refer to life and learning as a journey. When it comes to learning and the success of your children, this is a journey we need to take together. Like the mechanic, as teachers we have trained and studied and we work collaboratively every day to try and identify challenges that might be getting in the way of this success. Unfortunately, this is not as simple as removing a part and replacing it with a new or repaired part. We need the knowledge of the child and the parent to help us understand the complexities of each unique child. Afterall, your child is unique. They are not a 2011 model Ford rolled off the production line, identical to thousands of other cars manufactured at the same time.
Raising a child to becoming a contributing, caring and productive member of society is the single, most important thing we can do in their lives. When it comes to education, we can’t do this on our own. When this partnership is valued, like it is at Sacred Heart, and our children see this positive trusting collaboration between home and school, they understand that we value education and their progress. In our respective roles in this important work, educators are not mechanics, and parents are not the customers. We are in a partnership towards achieving a very special thing for your children every day – their success. Like any partnership, when this one between home and school includes trust, cooperation, and collaboration, it will flourish, and, as a result, so will your child.
Parent and Teacher Meetings – these will be held on Monday, 21st March from 12pm. Interviews can occur over the phone, face to face or online through Zoom. This meeting with your child’s teacher is the only one that we expect all parents to attend. Later in the year we offer another formal opportunity however, unlike these meetings on 21st March, are optional to attend. Of course, we are always open to other meetings that may need to happen in between – both formal and informal. Registration for these meetings will be through the Sentral Parent App. If you have not registered your family key to access the portal, it would be best to do this as soon as possible. Please contact the office should you require assistance with registering your key. We look forward to meeting with you to celebrate your child’s successes while sharing their challenges and next steps in their learning.
‘Welcome Breakfast’ and ‘Leaders Induction Mass’– Our Prep and Year 6 Families are invited to join for a free breakfast from 8am on Friday, 18th March organised and supplied by our school’s Parents and Friends (P&F) Association. This will coincide with our school’s ‘Leaders Induction Mass’ beginning at 9am. Our Prep students will have a part to play in this celebration so we are encouraging both Prep and Yr 6 Families to stay on after breakfast.
Save the date! 2022 Meet and Greet – with COVID restrictions lifting, we are now able to confirm the date of our ‘Meet and Greet’ evening on Thursday, 21st April from 6pm to 8pm. This is sure to be another enjoyable evening and an opportunity for families to meet while the children have some fun. The P&F have this well in hand with more information to come. We look forward to seeing you all there.
COVID 19 update – what happens after the 4th March? The Queensland Government’s ‘Back to School Plan’ and the restrictions that were a part of this plan from the 7th February, will change from this Friday at 6pm. Please see below for what will change and what will remain the same:
I hope you have a safe and enjoyable week.
God bless.

FROM THE APRE
Caritas Lenten ‘Project Compassion Appeal’
Spanning across the six weeks of Lent each year, Project Compassion brings thousands of Australian schools, parishes and supporters together to raise funds for people living in some of the most vulnerable communities across the world.
The theme of Project Compassion 2022 is ‘For All Future Generations’ and reminds us that the good that we do today will extend and impact the lives of generations to come. It invites us to make the world a better place by working together now and finding long-term solutions to global issues. This year’s theme comes from the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. More specifically, when the flood waters subsided, a rainbow appeared in the sky and the dove returned with an olive branch indicating a new beginning. God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations’ (Genesis 9:12).
At this stage, Sacred Heart will be supporting Caritas by collecting classroom donations as well as donating 100% of the money from of our Year 6’s Shrove Tuesday pancake stall as well as the Year 1/2 Easter Pageant raffle. I would like to offer a massive thank you to all those family and friends who have supported their children (and Sacred Heart) in these two wonderful initiatives. Together, we can all help to break the cycle of poverty and injustice for future generations!
Year 1/2T Raffle
It’s that time of year again – our Easter Raffle is here! This week we’ll be sending out tickets to all families to sell to raise money for our Caritas Project Compassion appeal. I want to send out a big thank you to Mrs Tevelein and Mrs Jesshope in Year 1J for their amazing efforts coordinating this, they are doing a great job.
Year 6 Shrove Tuesday Pancake Stall
In Australia the day preceding Ash Wednesday is known as Shrove Tuesday. It is also frequently called Pancake Tuesday. But it is the name ‘Shrove’ that shows its religious origins. ‘Shrove’ is the past tense of the English verb ‘Shrive’ which means to obtain absolution for one’s sins by way of confession and by doing penance. During the Middle Ages, Shrove Tuesday became a time for clearing the richer foods from the cupboards in preparation for the Lenten fasting in some parts of Europe. So that no food was wasted, families would make pancakes, as it was a dish that could use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour. We carried on this tradition today with the leadership of our Year 6 class and Mrs Barrett. This was a great success, and the pancakes were enjoyed by all!
Ash Wednesday
We celebrated Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the season of Lent – a time when we prepare ourselves for Jesus’ death and resurrection at Easter. Expressing great sadness for the worsening situation in Ukraine, we joined in prayer with Pope Francis who has called for a global day of prayer and fasting for peace on Ash Wednesday.
Sacramental Program
This year, the Sacred Heart Parish is once again offering a Sacramental Program to families of the school and the local community. I emailed a reminder to all parents of children in Year 3 – 6 as the Commitment Mass and first Sacramental lesson is this Sunday so if this is one that you and your child have been contemplating then the time to act is now!

CLASSROOM AWARDS
Congratulations to the following students who have received a Sacred Heart Award during the last two weeks.
From Prep
The Prep students have been settling into the routines of school and have already learnt so much!
This week we have been learning about the church calendar season of Lent. We made pancakes for Shrove Tuesday and learnt about what happens with the ashes on Ash Wednesday.
From 1J
In Literacy sessions over the last two weeks, 1J have been focusing on sequencing stories. The children have enjoyed using sequencing cards to retell ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ and ‘Hansel and Gretel’. They have grasped the concept of the beginning, middle and end of a story which will come in handy for the retell component of their reading assessment in the coming weeks.
Last week, Year One visited Healthy Harold. Healthy Harold made it clear that, ‘Never before in time, and never again in time, will there be another person just like you!’ With this important message, the children looked at ways to keep healthy and how to make healthy food choices.
In History and Social Science, the children have been exploring terminology such as past, present, and future and referred to these words in their own lives. One activity that the children completed was to think about their future and what they want to be when they grow up. I love hearing what the children aspire to be and look forward to seeing them in the future as vets, race-car drivers, artists, nurses, and scientists plus many more professions.
Every Friday, the 1J class have Library where they have the opportunity to find books to take home. It is great to see the enjoyment the children have for reading and making the most out of borrowing books linked in with their interests.
That’s all for now. Have a great weekend!

Year 1/2T Science- Spot the difference
The Mysterious Object - Can you help solve the mystery?
A mysterious object was found outside the 1/2T classroom and Mrs Tevelein needed the help of the students to solve the mystery of what has happened.
We did a Think, Pair, Share activity where the students took turns to listen to each other’s ideas, agree on one idea, and then write their answers on their worksheet.
- What clues helped you to decide what it was before?
Do you think it changed quickly or slowly? (Depends how hot it was on the day.) - What do you think the person who left it there would think when they came back? Do you think it is the same as when they left it?
- Can it be changed back to how it was before? Why or Why not?
- How could we change it back?
We then brainstormed other ways change happens, such as: animals and plants growing, sunny changing to rainy, shadows getting longer, baby growing into a child, baking a cake, a caterpillar changing to a butterfly, fruit ripening.
Stay tuned, next week we will be Spaghetti Scientists.
Mrs Angela Tevelein

Welcome to Week 4.
This week we were given the opportunity to purchase delicious pancakes for Shrove Tuesday and in turn we helped raise much needed funds for Caritas. We learnt that during Lent we can show our love for others by helping - Almsgiving. This includes choosing to donate money to projects or charities and organisation in our community.
On Ash Wednesday we wrote out our Lenten promise on a chain and hung it up in the classroom to remind us that we can make sacrifices just like Jesus did when he went into the desert and fasted for 40 days. Our promise is our way of fasting.
In English we are currently studying the picture book ‘Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge’ by Mem Fox. This book is about a boy, Wilfred, who tries to help an elderly lady, Nancy, regain some of her memory. It is a story I think most of us can relate too. For me my own father is suffering dementia, so at times I feel like Wilfred.
In Mathematics we are learning to count on and backwards quickly and accurately in 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10’s. We are looking at ascending and descending order for numbers up to 1000.
In HASS we are learning all about celebrations and commemorations and we all agreed we LOVE having or going to birthday parties.
Friendly reminder: Home Readers are due into school on Thursday not Friday. Homework and library books are due on Friday.
Have a great weekend. God bless!
Mrs Jacque Armstrong and Mrs Jodie Manley
From 3/4G
As we enter one of its most significant times in the Catholic calendar, the students have focused on understanding the reasons behind Shrove Tuesday - Pancake Day (as well as eating quite a few) and Lent.
Wednesday, we celebrated a Lent Liturgy in our classroom and wrote our Lenten promises for this Lent. Please talk to your children about this to help them understand that the promise that they made is something to work on from now until Easter.
This week we have also placed on a map of the world all the places where families in our class have origins in. Take a look at the photo of our world map. We had 12 different countries to mark on the map.
In Visual Art time we are learning to weave on wooden looms with various amounts of success but a lot of enthusiasm. This skill is great for children’s fine motor skills.
Have a great weekend.

Welcome to another fabulous fortnight in 4C!
Congratulations to Westley and Anita (Week 3) and Ben S and Tahlia (Week 5) on their awards!
During Week 4, students have been putting into action all their learnings about Place Value. We have been working in small groups to consolidate our understanding of numbers up to 99 999.
Check out the photos attached of our learning!

From 5L
We’ve had a very productive couple of weeks in 5L.
Students were excited to welcome Mr Toohey back to school last week!
We all fared the wild weather and had plenty of stories and photos to share in spontaneous ‘Show and Share’ on Monday morning.
In English, students have been reading and listening to David Walliam’s World’s Worst Children short stories and now they have started to develop their very own short story inspired by David Walliam’s engaging way of writing. As a part of developing their character, students had the opportunity to create their character’s Memoji to further develop their character’s personality and mood. I captured some photos of the journey so far to write their own short story. The excitement in the room was palpable so I can’t wait to see the students develop their plot!
In HASS, we’ve been exploring the impact of inland expeditions on colonial Australia. A moment that made me ponder my memories of the 1990’s was when we were discussing telegrams and a student informed the class that people in the ’90’s used to communicate by attaching a small note to a pigeon’s foot.
Please check the Weekly Words to keep up-to-date on any changes to routine.

Thank you to all of the wonderful Sacred Heart community for providing our pikelets for Shrove Tuesday. We had over 530 orders to fill and we manage to make $170 approximately for our first instalment for the Missions. Our senior students were like a well-oiled machine preparing and serving our school orders – with the support of our ever-ready Mrs Weber ensuring our supplies were adequate! We hope that the students from Prep to Year 6 enjoyed their day and understood the significance of the day. We carry on the "Shrove" tradition today and at Sacred Heart we raise money for Caritas every year, thanks to the generosity of our families and staff. Ash Wednesday then provided our class with the opportunity to consider the importance of this day; to understand that it is a beautiful way to remember Jesus’ sacrifice for us and to prepare us for the Easter season. In class we enjoyed some Lenten art that will be displayed in our room and we participated in the Ash Wednesday liturgy.
Curriculum-wise this week students have been looking at the correct ways to add and subtract larger numbers and using the order of operations in Mathematics; English has seen us focus on locating key words in a text to provide evidence when answering related questions; Science has seen the students now completing their draft/shared information report structure ready for them to begin research on their chosen animal. Their assessment is an information report with an annotated drawing of an animal and its particular adaptations required to survive. Students will present their information in both written and verbal form; Visual Art this week provided the students with the opportunity to create a Lenten piece of art to put on show for the period of Lent, whilst exploring the elements of shape and form.
We have been speaking with the class about our continued focus on hygiene; using the sanitiser each time we enter the room and the cleaning of desks, chairs and door handles regularly. We are keeping windows and doors open with fans on to allow good ventilation. If your child is feeling unwell, please keep them at home and if we notice a student starting to sneeze, cough or not feel the best, we will call parents to collect them.
We have much work to get through before the end of the term, so watch this space for updates on the great work that year 6 are doing in all curriculum areas.
DATE CLAIMER: Please note we have scheduled our Senior Induction Mass for Friday 18th March at 9am in the Hall. All are welcome to attend.
Have a wonderful fortnight.
