‘Communities of Faith, Hope and Love’ – Next week sees our school and catholic schools across Queensland celebrating ‘Catholic Education Week’. This is a special week of our year where we acknowledge the very special atmosphere we have within our catholic schools and celebrate the efforts of our communities in making this a daily reality.
It never ceases to amaze me just how consistent the response from our new enrolling families is when asked the question: “Why Sacred Heart Primary School?” Overwhelmingly, the responses generally reflect what they have seen or heard- that we are inclusive and welcoming. It is no surprise that this year’s ‘Catholic Education Week’ theme; ‘Communities of Faith, Hope and Love’, is so relatable for us here at Sacred Heart.
‘Walking every day with Jesus’ is a motto that we live here at Sacred Heart. How we welcome, include and care for everyone in our school is unapologetically modelled on the man that Jesus is. Regardless of the strength of your own faith, what we all want for our children is for them to become caring and contributing people in society. Jesus, in his time as a man with us here on Earth, challenged us to treat each person as unique and special – to love one another. Of course to include and care for others, is not just about being nice, it takes on another level in our schools.
To include and care in our schools, is to ensure that each child is met where they are in their academic, social, emotional and spiritual learning. It is truly exciting watching educators and families working together to advance this cause. It is this collective effort that makes Sacred Heart a school community of faith, hope and love.
More information on the activities of this week at our school are mentioned in this newsletter.
The state launch will be live streamed from Toowoomba’s St Patrick’s Cathedral (the link for this live stream can be found at the end of this article). This will be attended by Mrs Lucas, our school captains and myself. Please follow this link to find the live stream link when it becomes available - Queensland Catholic Education Week - 26 July - 1 August 2020.
Covid Update – This week has seen our school succumb to a wave of Covid cases with a dozen or so of these being reported in recent email notifications. Thank you to our staff and relief staff for their stoic efforts this week in the face of challenge. On behalf of our staff, I would also like to thank our families for their understanding (during some staff shortages) and for your vigilance in keeping your children home when they are unwell. These are challenging times but together, we’ll get through.
Welcome Miss Kelly – This week we welcomed Miss Heidi Kelly to the year 5L class. The year 5 students have been very helpful in bringing Miss Kelly up to speed with the learning expectations at Sacred Heart. We know that you will join us in welcoming Miss Kelly to our Sacred Heart family.
God bless,
Mr Tyronne Maher

People of Hospitality
A warm welcome to Term Three! This term we are focusing on living out the Mercy value of Hospitality. Each class has been working out what this looks like, sounds like and feels like in their classroom. In 5L students have created a class handshake that they use to greet each other at the start of the day. Our Year 6s have create a class chant and have set the goal to welcome new students into their friendship groups. In 1J, Hospitality will look like students using a morning greeting and helping people when they are hurt. At Sacred Heart, we strive to show love and welcome for one another through Hospitality.
Catholic Education Week
Celebrated annually in week 3 of Term 3, Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all 309 catholic schools in Queensland. Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.
Next week, we join with schools across Queensland to celebrate Catholic Education Week (CEW). This year the theme of CEW is ‘Communities of faith, hope and love’.
We have many special things happening at Sacred Heart to celebrate CEW next week. See an outline of just a few of these things below:
Assembly
This term our School Assembly will be held fortnightly (even weeks). Our Assembly is ably lead by our Year 6 leaders. All families are welcome, invited and encouraged to attend our assemblies from 2:10 pm every second Monday.
God bless everyone and thanks for reading.
Mrs Alice Lucas

Prayer of the Week
Welcoming God,
Free my heart to recognise all those you send into my life
To teach me about You.
May every person and experience be a source of wonder.
May I never miss opportunity to embrace and engage with
Amazing variety of Your creation.
Open me to all that it means to be human
And give me a sense of gratitude for all
Who walk this path with me.
I ask this in the name of Jesus
Who chose to be human as a way of revealing You.
Amen

Class Awards
From Year 1J
Term 3 Curriculum:
English: In English this term, 1J will continue to practise their sight words, and develop their skills in reading, spelling, and writing. They will also explore narratives and discuss ways authors engage the reader.
For Show and Share this term, the children have been asked to convince the rest of the class what their favourite book is and why. I look forward to hearing all about their favourite books in the coming weeks and cannot wait to see what they/parents come up with for our annual Book Week, Dress Up Parade on Thursday 18th August.
Mathematics: This term, 1J will recognise, describe, and order Australian coins according to their value and explain time durations. They will continue to carry out simple addition and subtraction sums using counting strategies, order objects based on length and capacity using informal units and tell time to the half hour.
Religion: Students will have the opportunity to make connections to their personal experience when explaining ways of living in accordance with God's plan for creation. They will also relate stories from some Old Testament texts that describe God's presence in action in the lives of individuals and communities.
Health: 1J will explore the Daniel Morcombe Curriculum, where they will learn to recognise, react, and report when they are unsafe or find themselves in situations that can have a detrimental effect on their physical, psychological, or emotional wellbeing.
Science and Design: Dinosaurs and More! - Through hands-on activities students will explore the external features of modern animals and compare them with the skeletons of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Students will learn about the protective features of dinosaurs and use those ideas to design, make, and appraise a ‘Dino Shield’.
Humanities and Social Science (HaSS): This semester, 1J will investigate and describe the natural, constructed, and managed features of familiar places in our local environment. Students will pose questions to help them understand weather and seasons in their town, state, and country, and compare the weather and seasons to other countries at Christmas time. They will also investigate and understand the way in which the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples describe weather and seasons in Australia.
Art: This semester, we will explore different artists through children's books based on our focused book each week. The student’s will express their experiences, feelings, ideas, and observations of the illustrations in these books. They will also work individually and with others to make artworks by experimenting with different art materials.
1J are very fortunate to have Physical Education on a Tuesday and the Arts with Ms Runciman on a Thursday which they all thoroughly enjoy.
Have a great weekend!
Kind regards,
Mrs Hannah Jesshope
From Year 4C
This term our focus is:
English
Students will explore language features of texts using traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories and create multi modal representations of their responses and retelling of stories. They will look at text structure, characters, settings and author’s purpose. Students will explore syllables, synonyms and antonyms, vocabulary and author’s purpose. They will use reading strategies such as predicting, monitoring, understanding and re-reading during reading activities. Students will comprehend texts using the QAR questioning strategy on a literal and inferential level and summarise a variety of texts in detail.
Maths
In this unit students apply a variety of mathematical concepts in real-life, lifelike and purely mathematical situations. Students have opportunities to develop understandings of:
- Number and place value – identify, read, order, partition and describe 5-digit numbers; identify and describe odd and even numbers and make generalisations about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing odd and even numbers, revise informal recording methods and strategies used for calculations, and make generalisations about the sequences, and apply mental and written strategies to computation
- Angles – compare the size of angles to a right angle, recognise and name common angles (right, acute, obtuse)
- Fractions and decimals - revise and investigate the fractions that can be created through repetitive halving and thirding, counting and representing fractions on number lines, represent fractions using a range of models, investigate equivalent fractions, solve fraction problems from familiar contexts
- Money – investigate change and equivalent money values, explore the value of money in different countries
- Measurement – explore distance and length, convert between units of measurement
Religion
Students identify a variety of books and text types in the Old Testament and New Testament and explain how a reader uses this knowledge to better understand God's Word. Students explain the significance of community for Christians. They connect ideas about living in community from different texts (including the wisdom of St Paul) and from the experiences of different communities, including contemporary Church communities. They describe practices and characteristics of contemporary parishes and dioceses (including celebration of the Sacraments of Anointing of the Sick and Penance) and explain how these are modelled on the mission and ministry of Jesus.
Science - ‘Beneath Our Feet’
Students will explore how force can be exerted by one object on another. They will investigate different types of forces and the effect these have on the behaviour on an object. Students will classify contact and non contact forces and apply their knowledge to designing a car that moves by push or pull.
HASS
In this unit, students develop civic knowledge and understanding, and apply citizenship skills to explore democracy in the context of the familiar and personal. They explore democracy through learning about decision making within communities. They also consider the purpose of creating rules for groups and how individuals participate in their community.
Digital Technology/Health/Art
In this unit students examine and interpret health information about cybersafety, cyberbullying and online protocols. They describe and apply strategies that can be used in online situations that make them feel uncomfortable or unsafe. They explore the importance of demonstrating respect and empathy in online relationships. They reflect on young people's use of digital technologies and online communities and identify resources available locally to support their safety.
